My Christmas Memories - In Dubai
Even though my children are so small and will probably never remember these days, I strive to make Christmas as special as I can for them. That’s probably because I remember Christmas as a very special time in my house.
I don’t really remember any Christmas in particular but the feeling of happiness and specialness of the season linger in my subconsious… Christmas, always meant, midnight mass for us. Even as a small child growing up, we went to the midnight service. It was always held outdoors in the open air… but then we grew up in warmer lands - Dubai and India. It was a fun time! We helped mom with wahat sweets we could and dad with putting up the decorations and Christmas tree.
My dad always wore a suit and my mom, a new dress or sari. Of course, us kids were dressed in our newest finery, bought especially for the occasion. After mass, we met up with friends to wish them and then we went home to eat up some Christmas sweets and drink some champagne… yes, we got a taste from mom and dad’s glasses and later when we were older, got our own little glasses… and no, none of us are alcoholics…
Christmas lunch was grand… we had turkey and lots of other delicacies. Another highlight was the Church Christmas Party. Santa always came on some fantastic mode of transport… sometimes a helicopter or a horse or camel and once even down a makeshift chimney. He sat each child on his lap and gave them their gifts. It was great! Then there was the Christmas bazaar and fun fair with games and food for all! It was great!
remember how the crib used to be empty before we leave for mass and how when we got back baby jesus wasin His little crib…? We always used t wonder haw dada did it without us realising…
Remember getting up Christmas morning feeling so happy and looking forward to lunch…
Remember visiting all the neighbours with a plat of goodies made at home…
Remeber as we got older, planning our own goodies to be made by us without moms help?
Remeber changing the curtains, making our own decoratons in goa???
What lovely memories and I hope and pray we can atleast equal that if not better it for our kids…
